Detailed Itinerary for 14 Day Birdwatching Tour in Morocco
Day 1: Marrakech Airport – High Atlas Mountains – Oukaimeden
Your birding adventure begins with a warm welcome at Marrakech Airport. From here, we drive into the High Atlas Mountains, heading to Oukaimeden, a ski resort at 2,600 meters. Along the way, we’ll spot resident species such as Southern Grey Shrike, Little Owl, Sardinian Warbler, Moussier’s Redstart, and House Bunting. At Oukaimeden, we’ll search for the endemic Levaillant’s Green Woodpecker, African Crimson-Winged Finch, Rock Sparrow, and Atlas Horned Lark. Dinner and overnight stay in the Atlas Mountains.
Day 2: High Atlas Mountains – Marrakech – Casablanca – Rabat
After an early breakfast, we descend from the mountains, making birding stops en route to Rabat. Look out for Calandra Lark and other species in the flat plains of Marrakech. We’ll continue northwest via Casablanca, arriving in Rabat for a 3-night stay. Dinner and accommodation in Rabat.
Day 3: Merja Zerga & African Marsh Owl
Today, we explore Merja Zerga, a coastal lagoon known for its rich birdlife. Our target species include the elusive African Marsh Owl, as well as Greater Flamingo, Marbled Duck, and Western Marsh Harrier. Dinner and overnight in Rabat.
Day 4: The Zaers – Sidi Bourhaba
An early start takes us to the Zaers Forest, where we’ll search for the secretive Double-Spurred Francolin. Other species here include Black-Crowned Tchagra, Black-Shouldered Kite, and Barbary Partridge. In the afternoon, we visit Lac de Sidi Bourhaba, a freshwater lake home to Red-Knobbed Coot, Marbled Duck, and White-Headed Duck. Dinner and accommodation in Rabat.
Day 5: Rabat – Meknes – Cedar Forest – Middle Atlas Mountains – Zaida
We head southeast to Zaida, stopping in the Cedar Forests of the Middle Atlas. Here, we’ll look for Levaillant’s Woodpecker, Ruddy Shelduck, and Barbary Apes. Other species include Wood Lark, Firecrest, and Great Spotted Woodpecker. Dinner and overnight in Zaida.
Day 6: Zaida Plain – Ziz Valley – Merzouga
Today, we search for the elusive Dupont’s Lark on the Zaida Plains. We’ll also spot Thekla Lark and Short-Toed Lark before heading south to the Sahara Desert. En route, we’ll look for Desert Lark, Black Wheatear, and Blue Rock-Thrush. Dinner and accommodation in Merzouga.
Day 7: Merzouga – Erg Chebbi Dunes – Rissani
A full day exploring the Sahara Desert. Target species include Desert Sparrow, Fulvous Babbler, Greater Hoopoe Lark, and African Desert Warbler. We’ll also scan the skies for migratory raptors and storks. Dinner and overnight in Merzouga.
Day 8: Merzouga – Goulmima – Todra Gorge – Tagdilt Track – Boumalne Dades
We leave the desert and head to Todra Gorge, where we’ll search for Tristram’s Warbler and Blue Rock-Thrush. Later, we explore the Tagdilt Track, a hotspot for Temminck’s Lark and Desert Wheatear. Dinner and accommodation in Boumalne Dades.
Day 9: Boumalne Dades – Tagdilt Track – Ouarzazate
We return to the Tagdilt Track to look for any missed species before heading to Ouarzazate. En route, we’ll stop at Barrage Mansour Eddahabi to spot Marbled Duck and Ruddy Shelduck. Dinner and overnight in Ouarzazate.
Day 10: Ouarzazate – Anti-Atlas Mountains – Souss Valley – Agadir
A scenic drive takes us over the Anti-Atlas Mountains into the Souss Valley. Target species include Black-Crowned Tchagra, Laughing Dove, and Spanish Sparrow. Dinner and accommodation in Agadir.
Day 11: Agadir – Cap Ghir – Tamri Estuary
We head north to Cap Ghir for seawatching and then to Tamri Estuary to search for the endangered Northern Bald Ibis. Dinner and overnight in Agadir.
Day 12: Oued Massa – Oued Souss – Sous Massa National Park
Today, we explore Oued Massa and Oued Souss, home to Marbled Duck, Moussier’s Redstart, and Greater Flamingo. Dinner and accommodation in Agadir.
Day 13: Agadir – High Atlas Mountains – Marrakech
We return to Marrakech via the High Atlas Mountains, with birding stops along the way. Enjoy a free evening to explore Marrakech’s vibrant Jemaa el-Fnaa Square. Dinner and overnight in Marrakech.
Day 14: Marrakech – Airport
If time permits, we’ll do some final birding around Marrakech before transferring you to the airport for your departure.
