7-Day Morocco Birding Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Oukaimeden
After meeting in Marrakech, we head into the High Atlas Mountains, reaching Oukaimeden (2,600m). Along the way, we’ll spot Southern Gray Shrike, Moroccan Magpie, Moussier’s Redstart, and more. At the snowline, we’ll search for the African Crimson-winged Finch, along with Rock Sparrow, Black Wheatear, and Atlas Horned Lark. We will also look for Levaillant’s Green Woodpecker and Alpine Chough. Dinner and overnight stay in a mountain lodge in the High Atlas.
Day 2: High Atlas – Ouarzazate – Boumalne Dades
We descend from the mountains towards the desert landscape of Ouarzazate, crossing the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass (2,260m). En route, we stop at Amerzgane to look for Maghreb Wheatear and Desert Lark. A key stop at Mansour Eddahbi Reservoir provides excellent birding opportunities, including sightings of Marbled Duck, Black-winged Stilts, Ruddy Shelduck, Herons, and Cormorants. As we approach Boumalne Dades, we may spot Bonelli’s Eagle and Long-legged Buzzard. Dinner and overnight stay in Boumalne Dades.
Day 3: Boumalne Dades – Tagdilt Track
Today, we explore the Tagdilt Track, one of the best birdwatching areas in Morocco. This stony desert is home to Red-rumped Wheatear, Temminck’s Lark, Cream-colored Courser, and Thick-billed Lark. Other possible sightings include Trumpeter Finch, Short-toed Lark, and Desert Wheatear. In the afternoon, we visit a rocky canyon where we may find Pharaoh Eagle Owl and White-crowned Wheatear. Dinner and overnight stay in Boumalne Dades.
Day 4: Boumalne Dades – Todra Gorge – Merzouga
We begin the day at Todra Gorge, where towering cliffs provide a habitat for Tristram’s Warbler, Blue Rock Thrush, and Bonelli’s Eagle. As we drive towards Merzouga, we stop in a desert scrub area to search for Scrub Warbler, Trumpeter Finch, and Hoopoe Lark. We reach the Erg Chebbi Dunes by late afternoon, where we settle in our desert accommodation and prepare for a spectacular evening of desert birdwatching. Dinner and overnight stay in Merzouga.
Day 5: Merzouga – Erg Chebbi Dunes – Rissani
A full day dedicated to exploring the Erg Chebbi dunes and surrounding desert plains. Target birds include Desert Sparrow, African Desert Warbler, Brown-necked Raven, Blue-cheeked Bee-eater, and Bar-tailed Lark.
