This 7-day birdwatching adventure in Morocco is designed for bird lovers who seek both rare bird species and breathtaking landscapes. From the snow-capped Atlas Mountains to the vast Sahara Desert, we explore Morocco’s most important birdwatching locations. The country serves as a crucial migratory route for birds between Africa and Europe, making it a paradise for birders. Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Oukaimeden
Our journey starts in Marrakech, heading towards Oukaimeden (2,600m) in the High Atlas Mountains, a prime location for high-altitude birds. We expect to see African Crimson-winged Finch, Levaillant’s Green Woodpecker, Atlas Horned Lark, Blue Rock Thrush, and Alpine Chough. Other highlights include Southern Gray Shrike, Little Owl, Sardinian Warbler, Moroccan Magpie, Moussier’s Redstart, and Spotless Starling.
Day 2: High Atlas – Ouarzazate – Boumalne du Dadès
We drive over the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass (2,260m), offering chances to spot Tristram’s Warbler, Long-legged Buzzard, and Bonelli’s Eagle. At Mansour Eddahbi Dam, we search for Marbled Duck, Ruddy Shelduck, Black-winged Stilts, Maghreb Lark, and various waders. We reach Boumalne du Dadès in the evening.
Day 3: Boumalne Dades – Tagdilt Track – Dades Gorge
The Tagdilt Track is one of Morocco’s most famous birding sites. Species we target include Red-rumped Wheatear, Hoopoe Lark, Temminck’s Lark, Short-toed Lark, Thekla Lark, Trumpeter Finch, Cream-colored Courser, and Thick-billed Lark. In the rocky canyons, we may also find Maghreb Wheatear, Desert Lark, and Pharaoh Eagle Owl.
Day 4: Boumalne du Dades – Todra Gorge – Goulmima – Merzouga
After breakfast, we visit Todra Gorge, home to Black Wheatear, Blue Rock Thrush, Crag Martin, and Tristram’s Warbler. Along the way, we search for Scrub Warbler, White-crowned Wheatear, and Trumpeter Finch. By evening, we arrive in Merzouga, the gateway to the Sahara Desert.
Day 5: Merzouga – Erg Chebbi Dunes – Rissani
A full day in the Sahara exploring Erg Chebbi Dunes, looking for Desert Sparrow, African Desert Warbler, Brown-necked Raven, Hoopoe Lark, Bar-tailed Lark, Spotted Sandgrouse, Crowned Sandgrouse, Blue-cheeked Bee-eater, and Barbary Falcon. If in season, we visit a nearby lake with possible sightings of Egyptian Nightjar.
Day 6: Merzouga – Tizi N’Telghomt – Zaida
We travel through the desert landscapes, passing the Tizi N’Telghomt Pass, searching for Dupont’s Lark, Tristram’s Warbler, Eared Wheatear, and Desert Wheatear. Evening accommodation in Zaida.
Day 7: Zaida – Beni Mellal – Marrakech
Early morning birding in Zaida for Dupont’s Lark, followed by a scenic drive back to Marrakech via the Middle Atlas Mountains, with stops for birdwatching. Drop-off at your Marrakech hotel or airport.

This tour involves easy to moderate walking, mainly on flat or slightly rough terrain. Some walks in mountainous areas require moderate effort. Participants who prefer to stay near the vehicle can do so.
